The SpringSwing is a dynamic AFO, also known as ankle brace or ankle splint), developed by Harmen Doornenbal and Wim Pijl of OIM Orthopedics.
The SpringSwing has a clever leaf spring construction (the Power Unit) that helps lift the foot in the swing phase.
The SpringSwing is custom-made using photomeasurement and is available in various colors and motifs.
Specifications of the SpringSwing Ankle Foot Orthosis
The SpringSwing has a clever leaf spring construction (the Power Unit) that helps lift the foot in the swing phase.
The SpringSwing is adjustable. With this setting, a bit more or less foot lift and control over the loading response phase can be achieved, so that there is a good mix between safety, support of lost functions and dynamic walking.
The SpringSwing is also made based on the Swift photomeasurement technique.. That means a fast and simple route for you. No complicated and time-consuming session where your leg must be casted and fast delivery (Swift sends the AFO in five business days after receiving all data).
The SpringSwing Power Unit can control the ankle movement during the swing phase and loading response phase, so that a smooth transition from swing to stand occurs and the foot drop is prevented.
The Power Unit can be made with three different leaf springs (flexible, medium and stiff), so that the right support of the ankle can be chosen that fits your leg and your situation.
This makes the SpringSwing a very dynamic orthosis, which only supports where and when it is needed.
Indication
Foot drop
People who have no control over the foot lift muscles (especially the Tibialis anterior muscle ) can not lift the foot properly during the swing phase. They have also trouble to properly control the foot to hit the floor smoothly. With them, the foot hits after heel contact with high speed the floor. That’s what is called foot drop.
Causes foot drop
There may be several reasons for failure on the foot lifters, for example:
Nervous peroneus failure, for example due to a hernia
Various muscle disorders
Due to its dynamic character, adjustability and low weight, the SpringSwing is widely used for Duchenne boys
Contraindication
Other Ankle Foot Orthoses for spasticity
The SpringSwing is less suitable for cases where spasticity occurs. A lot more power must be delivered in those cases. In these cases, consider the Swift AFO (backside splint) stiff or medium stiff version, a Swift Dynamic Ankle Foot Orthosis with plantar stop, or a Swift Nachtspalk for stretching up a shortened calf muscle.

Manual photo measurement AFO
The Ankle Foot Orthosis is available in several prints.
The classic Swift AFO is also made based on the Swift photomeasurement technique. That means a fast and simple route for you. No complicated and time-consuming session where your leg must be casted and fast delivery (Swift sends the AFO five business days after receiving all data).
